took a half year break from blogging to focus on other things having to do with business, family, and my crazy health. I'm feeling pretty stable in most areas these days so I'm going to give it another whirl.

Let's see, over the last 6 months I've:

Participated in a number of really fun shows. I've learned the ropes and know where I want to return next year.

Placed my jewelry with 6 different stores and one gallery! This was a higher number than the goal I'd set for myself so I was really pleased.

Became a premium member of Trunkt and have an ever growing portfolio there.

Improved my Focal Point Birth Pendant line and have had a bunch of sales through attachmentscatalog.com.

Created a line of copper and leather bookmarks which I love! I gave them to my whole family this holiday season!

Worked hard on my soldering skills in a 6 week mentored metalsmithing class.

Opened a shop on 1000Markets. It's a lovely site and well worth visiting!

Whew! And that's just the jewelry biz! Anyway, I hope to get back to regular posting and making some decisions on how best to use the blog. Stay tuned!

My First Give Away!

Come read this giveaway blog- babylyonstreasuries. A few weeks ago I was surfing around and got in on a conversation about cross promotion. AlwaysAmy had this idea: 10 people mail out two promos to 10 other people across the country(world). Everyone takes the promos they get and posts them on two community bulletin boards. Then, take a picture, send it to Amy, and blog about it. About 20 people replied so Amy put us into two groups.

As of now, I've received 5 out of 10 promos and am planning where to post. I'm thinking the shops on Alki Beach are a good choice for a lot of exposure. Here's who's in my group:

AlwaysAmy
Bamabelle
RecycledIdeas
adlenskrafts
RosannaElizabeth
BeadBratOriginals
CustomMemoryBooks
DesignedbyLucinda
LoveMeKnotCreations
Stubbornwoman

I'll post pictures when I get everyone's promo!

Movin' Right Along

Oh poor neglected blog. Let's get some new info out there!

First of all, I just spent four days staying with my sister-in-law and helping her with her new baby. Oh man, I love newborns! Certainly easier when they're not your own. Gave lots of breastfeeding help which, new moms and moms to be, you're gonna want! Get help- it might not come naturally and it might not feel so good.

Next, it's summer vacation for the kids! They're home all the time! I need a plan! Seriously, I'm hoping for lots of sun, time at the beach, and no homework. The kids are old enough to stay alone for a while too so I'm planning on a little time to myself.

Then there's the jewelry stuff. I'm happily making copper and have re-supplied the gallery. I also need to make more earrings for Oak, the craft store in Boston I've got my things in. And, I've got some shows coming up so I need to get cracking on the production! I don't know why I've been putting it off. I like pressure, I guess. And, I got accepted to trunkt, an online portfolio site that wholesalers and retailers like to shop. I need to spend time getting my portfolio together today, as I decided to spring for the premium account.

Finally, still sick. I'm frustrated to say that I'm still struggling with the after effects in June. I'm sick to my stomach most of the time and tired all the time. This is making moving ahead with my business plan very difficult. To say nothing of maintaining myself at work and being a good parent and wife.

I have so many cool ideas floating around in my brain that it's hard to sleep but I'm having trouble with the follow through.

To keep my spirits up, I'm moving along as though nothing has happened and planning for the future. I'm scheduling shows, which are fun and exciting, I've come up with two totally new design ideas that I've introduced to my shop, and I've had a meeting with a gallery director in West Seattle. And...... she took all my new copper patina pendants! That was a huge boost last week.

I guess I've been thinking a lot lately about what kind of person gives up under these circumstances and I'm hoping it's not me. It would be so easy to crawl into bed but something just won't let me do that. Doing my art has helped me to stay optimistic and has given me a reason to keep looking forward.

Trina and Friends

Afew weeks ago a new online crafts company asked if they could feature some of my pieces on their site. This site is geared toward "high end" shopping and I was pleased that their buyer felt that my jewelry qualified. A very nice thing about this site is that there will only be 5-10 sellers in any one category. This will make it MUCH easier to find my jewelry. I am, of course, sticking with Etsy because I love it there but this is another web presence for me.

Anyway, I check their site progress periodically and was surprised to find my pieces available for purchase today! The whole thing looks great and I'm excited to be part of it. Check out my jewelry and the whole site here: Trina and Friends.

Heat Patina

I've been spending some time experimenting with heat patinas and copper. After several unsuccessful attempts, I came upon a method that works for me and gets me some beautiful colors.

After shaping, sanding, hammering, and tumbling my copper, I use my butane torch. I heat the whole piece until it starts to turn and then I quench in cold water. I then put the copper back on the fire brick and heat all over again. I may do this process several times until I get the colors I want. Next, I run the copper upstairs to the freezer and leave it in for a few hours. The pieces have come out very shiny and with lovely color variations. I'm currently using no sealer, as I'm worried this will alter the patina. We got to see a mix of rain, sleet, sun, and hail stones- alternating about every 15 minutes! This did not make for a huge turn out at the Arts Unlimited show in Renton. Luckily, I was stationed near several Etsyrain folks and had people to talk to all afternoon.

I viewed this show as a learning experience. I'm actually rather proud to say that I was able to set up and take down my tent (with a little help) and could carry everything- including the cinder blocks I used to keep the tent from flying away. Those blocks are actually part of a bookcase that we built in our 20s and yes, we still use it.

I learned that I really need to order some tent walls! Thanks to Marlo and Suzanne for lending me their extras. Without them my tables would have gotten even more soaked. Ah yes, and thank to to Marlo for the paper towels. I figured out, too late, that if you're doing a show in the rain your tables will get wet while you set up your tent. I definitely need to throw in a roll next time.

Overall, I'm still glad I went- I even sold a pair of earrings. Now I'm very pumped for our next show in May. And it's indoors. Hurrah!

Shows and Rain

Quite a month. I'm still not allowed to eat most foods and I'm not feeling my best but I've decided to forge ahead anyway! After a fun trip to NYC I've gotten to work on setting up my studio and making LOTS of pieces. I'm going to be doing a few shows in the coming months so I'm trying to get ready for them. Actually, on Saturday I'm doing my first outdoor show by myself. I've got the tent and tables and I'm pretty happy with the display this time. I'm using shutters to hang the earring cards and a wood lattice from some french doors to hang the pendants.

However..... it's supposed to rain and possibly SNOW on Saturday. Yes, I'm sure there's no trace of climate change! Snow in Seattle in mid-April is unheard of. So, I'm trying to figure out the best way to keep warm and dry and not have my jewelry blow away. Some other folks from EtsyRain, now also known as Puget Sound Indie Artisans, are brainstorming survival tips for the day.

And by the way, the Puget Sound Indie Artisans are putting on our own show the day before Mother's Day in Edmonds. We are so excited!

Bead Trends Idea Book

My copies of Bead Trends March/April edition arrived in the mail today and I'm very excited! I'm still recovering from my surgery and find I'm passing out around 8pm these days. I've started teaching my night classes again so that's going to have to change. I'm also awaiting my 40th birthday with mixed emotions. Getting back to work is starting to help me feel "normal" again but I'm still not feeling like "me". I'm not really worried about aging and I'm excited about the future (as I look out the window at the rain). I just wish I could eat that chocolate cake that I'm not allowed to have. Doctors. Hmph.

Anyway, I've been experimenting with fusing rings these days and put a few in my etsy shop this week. I've also redesigned my work space in the basement. Maybe I'll get a picture up here next time.

New Earrings I Like

Wow, being home recovering from surgery has given me all kinds of time on my hands. For the last few weeks I was really only lying on the couch but today I've got some energy. Why not blog again??

I've been able to create some new earring designs and have sent them off to Oak, a new store in Boston that will be carrying some of my pieces. I'm excited to see how this little cross-country experiment goes. I can't monitor the store in person but the owner has done a pretty good job of keeping vendors up to date on her website and blog. Members on both teams pick artists to blog about- a fabulous idea. Today, I'll be posting about electronrings.

Marya, the designer behind electronrings, makes beautiful pieces of wearable art by felting pieces she's crocheted. Her work includes rings, necklaces, belly dance belts, and purses. These pieces are totally original and simply gorgeous!

Quoting from her profile:
"I get my inspiration from some of the smallest particles known to humankind, AND ancient architecture, such as the Nazca Lines in Peru, and the Hill of Tara in Ireland. I'd like to think I am "remembering" my designs, rather than just creating them."

Her work can be seen and purchased on her Etsy site: http://www.electronrings.etsy.com

Sick and Tired

Oh, it's been a long time since I've posted anything. Early this month I had emergency surgery to remove most of my small intestine and I've been trying to recover ever since! I'm still not back to my regular job and eating is a real chore. Needless to say, the jewelry making has been put on hold. I do have an order that needs to go to Boston next week so I'd better get crackin'.

On the odd chance that anyone has info for me about "short bowel syndrome", I'd gladly take it. I miss pizza!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fusing!

Earlier this month I took a class on fusing and it's opened up a whole new world of ideas for me. A long time ago I took lots of classes on soldering, so I know how that goes, but it's messy and requires more time and equipment. The basic idea behind fusing is that you don't need solder or flux or pickle. You simply heat the metal with a butane torch (mine's a micro torch) until the silver begins to liquify and flows. Basic materials that I aquired to do this:

micro torch

butane

fire brick

old cookie sheet to sit the brick on

bowl of water to quench the hot silver

fine silver wire- 14 g.

tumbler

I'm using fine silver instead of sterling because sterling silver gets fire scale when heated. That's where the pickling comes in. With fine silver you simply heat it, quench it, and tumble it if you want it really shiny. The tumbler also work hardens the metal. Fine silver is especially soft after being heated so it's important to tumble it so that the piece keeps its shape.

So, I've set up a workspace in the basement for the metal work and I'm loving it! For me, designing metal pieces feels more creative than bead work. I love beautiful beads but I'm excited about the direction my work is taking. I'm planning on using the stones as accents in my new pieces and really concentrating on the look of the silver or copper.

the handbook to handmade

I arrived home from NYC last night to find my edition of the handbook to handmade: Volume I! I'm happy to report that all gifts (except 2 books) are handmade by me, and others, and I didn't have to enter a mall once! I've had a great time going to crafts fairs and shopping on Etsy and I really like the gifts I'm giving this year. My husband and I have decided to try to have a "not made in China holiday season" this year and it's really hard! Especially shopping for kids who really want to fit into mainstream culture right now. Many are just not interested in being original, what they want most is to fit in. That's been a hard one to grapple with as a parent of a teenager. All we can do is set an example and hope....This is why I can't wait to see how they turn out.

Snow! The kids were so psyched but wishing it had been on a school day. We had snowball fights and built a snowman. I remember when whole winters in Seattle would go by without a single flake. But, there's no climate change, right?

And now we're trying to set a record for rainfall in 24 hours. They're expecting five inches today! A river of rain is running down my street and I'm keeping my eye on the storm drain at the bottom! Wow, maybe not being able to teach that 4th class this year at the college is a good thing after all. I have the opportunity to sit here on a Monday morning and think about the weather. I got to talk with people I hadn't seen in a long time and had an "adult" evening. Plus, I sold several pieces which always puts me in a good mood. This setting up your table at a crafts fair thing is a lot harder than it looks! This was my 5th time since last Spring and I feel like I finally have an arrangement I like. Decorating and arranging really doesn't come naturally for me! Anyway, I'm so glad I decided to step outside my comfort bubble and keep trying with this new business. I'm having a great time creating (which is the best part) but I'm also meeting really interesting new people and doing things I never would have done before.

I'm rambling. Here are some pictures of my latest work.

Maybe not so much of a mystery

OK, I just took some cool photos of my "mystery" bags and I want to post them. Last night 10 of us got together on Julie's houseboat (awesome!) to put together sampler bags. Each of us brought 10 handmade items, each worth $10, and then we put together 20 sampler bags to sell in our shops and to promote EtsyRain. So, each bag has $50 worth of items and we're selling them for $25. Each member then keeps what thier listing earns.

The bags contain jewelry, note cards, candles, and beautiful textiles. Part of me is hoping one of them won't sell so that I can keep the contents for myself!

Come visit my etsy shop to find links to all of the artists who participated.

And Trina, last night was NOT a good time for a swim!

Talentdatabase.com

I just found out that I'm a featured artist this week on talentbase.com. It looks so great in there! I'm looking forward to a lot of fun and maybe even a lot of sales! I love the atmosphere in the studio and the wine and snacks won't be bad either. I'll have some wonderfully creative artists for company that night.

Other crafty news- I took a digital photography class yesterday taught by Marlo of http://imakecutestuff.etsy.com and of Etsy Rain fame. I got some great tips and ideas and am master of the white balance! I've already started listing some pieces on etsy with the new and improved photos. Very nice!

Take the Pledge, etc

I've just taken the pledge to buy handmade this holiday season. Well, I participated in a craft fair in Phinney Ridge last weekend. Very fun to see everyone but not a lot of selling action for me. So, I've been working on some new pieces to showcase on my website. The earrings aren't my usual style but I'm really liking them! And now I have more to show off at the Kick Off the Holidays show I'm doing with fellow etsyrain folks at Stir on November 1st from 5-10pm. You can check http://www.stirboutique.com for more details. I'm very excited about this show and so happy to be expanding my horizons this year!

Get Organized!

I've probably said it before but organization is not one of my strong points. I've got lots of ideas but I still wind up with little piles everywhere. Last year I bought an accordion folder for all my home receipts. Well, right now I'm looking at it and it's balanced precariously on top of 6 months worth of receipts! Yes, that's on my to-do list today. Anyway, I asked for tips in the Etsy forums earlier this week and here's what I got:

EyePopArt says:
Well, it's not the most exciting idea in the world, but it works for me. I got an over-the-door hanging shoe holder for the closet door in my crafting space. It has 24 sturdy, clear plastic pockets that I use to organize all of my clutter, such as envelopes, glues, scissors, postcards, staplers, rulers, tools, and even some shoes. Since I don't have a lot of drawer space I find it very helpful. Here's a picture:http://flickr.com/photos/eyepopart/1507589589/

DragoninKnots says:
Some ideas:- You know those plastic bags with zippers that bedding and curtains come in? They are great for storing large items like blankets, clothing, scarves, shawls, etc., so they don't get all jumbled up in a tote. They are clear, so it is easy to find an item when someone purchases it.
And since you would be reusing them, they are better for the environment than buying something else.
- If you are looking for a bead organizer and can't find what you want, try going to a hardware store and looking at their organizers for screws, nails, etc.
- Computer keyboard boxes that open from the top are great for storing jewelry in little boxes because they are thin and long, so all the small jewelry boxes are easily accessible.

ConstantDreamer says:
I put all of my paints and various markmaking tools in small plastic baskets (I bought them at Target). They sit inside a cabinet until needed. My brushes are kept in a container originally meant for kitchen utensils. My other big thing is to get rid of any supplies I don't use regularly. If I don't want to throw them, I put them in containers and store away from my work area until needed.

miribelladesigns says:
I keep my beads in an apothecary cabinet I restored and refinished. The drawers are nice and small and it looks better than most regular organizational drawer units.

Stay tuned for more tips! I'll be working on some of these myself!!

I've been tagged!

My first time getting tagged! While this was great news, I suddenly realized that I was really low on inventory! I'll be participating in several crafts fairs soon and I don't have too much to offer. So, I'm back at work making earrings and necklaces. I have about 3 weeks until the first show so my goal is at least one new piece a day. We'll see! I've also done some listing at Etsy, which I'd put on hold for a while. I was inspired by my fruit bowl and took pictures of my jewelry with a kiwi.

Coughing: Most of us have caught the back-to-school cold. It's been a week now and we just can't stop coughing. Not making for very restful nights.

Happy Family: Well, kind of. This will probably jinx it but the kids are getting along and we're all basically enjoying each other's company. We're all a part of a group we call Etsy Rain (Seattle, get it? Ha ha). This is a wonderful group of people with a wide range of talents. Etsy Rain serves as a brainstorming group, a support group, a social group (although I aparently missed a very fun art walk recently), a promotional group, and a great way to find a person to share a table with at the many craft fairs coming up! I'm very psyched to have become involved with these creative folks. Check out their blogs and their shops- you won't be disappointed.

Cat Rhymes

I took some pictures of the kitties for my daughter this week. The business, http://www.digital-scrapbooking.org/, is primarily just what it sounds like. Sorry, I didn't even know what digital scrapbooks were until a week ago. Anyway, her customers have been asking if she'll sell some crafts online as well so she created a "crafts" category and featured my jewelry. Within 2 days my first bracelet sold! And, she said she wanted more in that style. Obviously this made my day. Nothing else has sold from that site this week but I'm excited anyway.

Today, with my confidence higher than usual, I decided to contact a bunch of boutiques in my area to see if they'd like to offer my pieces as well. Yes, I was immediately rejected from one but I'm still waiting on the others. I'm still not quite ready to visit the ones which require a face to face appointment. Maybe next month.

I also thought I'd post some of my photography today. People on etsy seem to like it more than the jewelry...

Back to School (and other things)

Well, my kids have gone back to school today and I'm alone in the house. Ahh. I actually had a pretty fun summer- sleeping in, doing everything slowly, eating lunch whenever we felt like it- but it's still nice to get back to a routine. And, I have 6 hours to take pictures and list new items in my shop and create!

I've gotten back into wire wrapping lately so I've made a few new pieces. I've also designed new earrings and I can't decide if I should sell them or wear them. That's the problem with those flashes of creativity- you get attached to the final product.

Home Improvement?

All the properties on my block look very similar. My very large pumpkin vine is growing no pumpkins. My corn stalks- they were looking good! Then yesterday I paid my garden a little visit, only to discover that our nocturnal friends have been enjoying corn on the cob. They actually peeled back the husks, ate the corn and then put the husk back! This may not be news to anyone but me but I was pretty bummed. Among other things, she was calling to tell me that a mutual friend of ours had been suffering from post partum depression (sounds like it was largely untreated) and had killed herself several months after the birth of her daughter. This was an intelligent, hard working woman who had been trying to get pregnant for a long time. It sounds like she changed profoundly after the birth and was so depressed that she couldn't see an end in site.

I can not emphasize enough how important it is for family and friends of new moms to be looking for signs of a post partum mood disorder during the first year. When I've had a chance to wrap my brain around this a bit more I will be publishing information on post partum and where to get help. Look for it in the next few days.

Summer Vacation- Almost Over

If you're a student, these words absolutely chill you to the bone. My own children get angry every time we pass the back to school isle in Target. My teaching ramps up again in September so I, too, am thinking lesson planning, registering 60 new students, will they like me?, learn anything from me?? As far as I know I'll be assigned three sections of toddler parents for the year. All want to know if their child is normal and extraordinary at the same time.

I love the children. No matter how hard the rest of my life may be that day I can forget it all for two hours when I chat with two year olds! I love talking with the parents. No one should have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to children. Happy, confident parents make for happy, confident children. That's what I try to offer each year. That's what I'm gearing up for now.

All of that said, and in spite of my own children, I'm looking forward to the start of school again. Some sort of regular schedule. Some time to myself to think and create and, and, and...... If you're a parent I don't need to finish that sentence!

So, I plan on enjoying these last few weeks and mentally preparing myself for all that comes with September. And, figuring out what I want to do with this blog!

Tried to follow my son's advice

I was really debating about holiday merchandise. In general, my stuff is not cute. Beading Halloween jewelry didn't seem to be my thing. But, my son REALLY wanted me to try to make an orange wire pumpkin. I tried and, I must say, it looked kind of crappy. Then he suggested I add the jack-o-lantern face. I didn't even bother to take a picture! So, I stepped back and thought about how I could do themed stuff in my own style. I came up with this necklace and these earrings. Understated and unusual. Not a pumpkin in sight.

My next challenge will be "holiday" time. Didn't grow up with Christmas and I can't see myself going that route. I'm neglecting other things. Like housework. My laundry is not "on schedule". My bathrooms could use some help. I can't remember the last time I dusted (I'm being honest here).

My typical day used to involve going to work, taking the kids to and from school, cleaning, cooking, helping with homework, and maybe even talking with my husband. How have I fit my craft into this?? Well, number one, it's summer. No homework or shuttling kids. Number two, which is much more important because it required some deep thought on my part, I decided that it was ok to spend some time on myself! When I make a piece of jewelry that I really like I feel great! When I develop my photography and decide that it's frame worthy I feel proud!

I'm fitting it in because I've let other things go. And I'm happier. And messier. After sitting through my first ever craft show today and talking with other artisans in Seattle I decided to give this a try. So much time spent working at the day job, carpooling kids, dealing with house stuff- I'd forgotten how good it feels to be creative.
